In Case You Missed It: Clovis Councilman and Deputy District Attorney Bob Whalen Announces Candidacy
Thursday, November 19, 2009
(Clovis) – Yesterday Clovis Councilman and Fresno Deputy District Attorney Bob Whalen officially kicked off his candidacy for the open 29th Assembly District being vacated by retiring Assemblyman Mike Villines. Whalen held his announcement at Clovis’ Veterans Hall flanked by many of his supporters and elected officials that have endorsed him. Whalen also unveiled his campaign’s new website at http://www.bobwhalen.com.
A sampling of the local news coverage for Whalen’s announcement includes:
“Whalen… has been raising money and collecting endorsements. Among those supporting Whalen are Fresno County Sheriff Margaret Mims, Fresno County Supervisor Judy Case, Clovis City Council Member Nathan Magsig and Fresno County Superintendent of Schools Larry Powell.” – Fresno Bee
“Whalen is a long time member of the Republican Party, who’s led the fight against higher taxes and wasteful spending.” – KSEE NBC Channel 24
“Whalen says he’s running because… ‘...we need to send somebody up there to Sacramento who has experience in government and has been able to balance budgets without raising taxes.’ That’s exactly what Whalen and his fellow City Council members have done in Clovis to the tune of a $1.1 million surplus at the close of the current fiscal year on June 30th, 2009.” – KMJ Radio
A fourth-generation Clovis resident, Bob Whalen was first elected to the City Council in March 2003, and, in 2009, completed his service as Clovis Mayor under the rotating mayor system. He has earned a reputation as a “tough on crime” advocate and “friend of the taxpayer” who has been a champion for small business growth.
