About Bob Whalen

Clovis City Councilman and Fresno County Deputy District Attorney Bob Whalen has earned a reputation as a ‘tough on crime’ advocate and ‘friend of the taxpayer’ who has been a popular figure in Fresno County Republican circles.  A fourth-generation Clovis resident,Bob Whalen was first elected to the City Council in March 2003, and served as Clovis Mayor from 2007 thru 2009, under the rotating mayoral system.

On the Council, Bob Whalen established himself as a no-nonsense fiscal conservative who has fought for fiscal discipline and has opposed tax increases. Most recently, he led the defeat of Measure A, which would have raised the local sales tax by one percent. He was the only councilmember to oppose the measure. Whalen has also worked to foster small business growth in the area and create more private sector jobs.

As a member of the Public Safety Committee for the League of California Cities, Bob Whalen has worked on strategies to help local governments keep their citizens safe. As evidence of these efforts, Bob Whalen authored a bill, carried by Assemblymember Mike Villines and signed by Governor Schwarzenegger, holding drunk drivers more accountable for their illegal acts.

Bob Whalen is also a Fresno County Deputy District Attorney serving on the Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Unit, where he has helped put dozens of the County’s worst criminals behind bars. He earned his Juris Doctorate from Regent University and his Bachelor’s Degree from Fresno State University. Additionally, Bob Whalen has been actively involved in the broader community, serving on the Board of Trustees for the San Joaquin College of Law, the Board of Advisors for the Clovis Salvation Army and is an active member of the Fig Garden Rotary.

Bob and Nancy Whalen live in Clovis where they are raising their children; Jacqueline (Jackie Mae) and their goddaughter, Octavia Gonzalez. Nancy is a Registered Dietitian (RD) and serves part-time at the Clovis Unified School District. The Whalens are also active members of their local church.
